CAT Catalytic Center

CAT Catalytic Center

CAT Catalytic Center is a collaborative effort between RWTH Aachen University, Bayer MaterialScience and Bayer Technology Service GmbH funded by these three partners. Researchers from the university and the industry come together to work on fundamental research in the fields of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis and the analysis of complex reactions with in-situ and on-line spectroscopy aiming at identifying new methods for highly selective and green processes.

Following topics are of special interest for the Center:

  • Synthesis of low molecular weight building blocks for polymers
  • CO2 fixation in polymers
  • Activation of CH bonds in hydrocarbons
  • Partial oxidation reactions
  • Redox catalysis

The CAT Catalytic Center is located in the chemistry building at Campus Melaten of RWTH Aachen University occupying a 400 m2 laboratory space. Between 15 and 20 scientists work at the Center, in addition to qualified experts from Bayer Research, therefore, leading to the interconnection of fundamental chemistry research and industrial research.

Internships can be organized at CAT Catalytic Center or eventually at the industrial cooperation partners of the Center.

Prof. Walter Leitner, an ACalNet academic member from RWTH Aachen University, is also a member of the management board of CAT Catalytic Center.
Dr. Thomas E. Müller is head of the Center and can be contacted about internship opportunities.
