Susannah Scott’s research involves the design and optimization of supported catalysts for use in large-scale chemical transformations ranging from olefin polymerization to biomass conversion. Using a combination of spectroscopic techniques (especially IR, NMR and X-ray absorption), kinetics, and mechanistic studies, her group studies the relationship between active site structure and reactivity on surfaces. Some catalysts have molecular origins and are activated by their interactions with solid materials, while others are dispersed metals and/or metal oxides. She is particularly interested in the use of catalysis to enhance the sustainability of chemical manufacturing.
