The RWTH Aachen University (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen) was established in 1870 and has since then grown to a leading European scientific and research institution with close links to industry. In 2007, the RWTH Aachen University was chosen as one of nine German Universities of Excellence by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation). It was one of only six universities to retain the status of University of Excellence in the second funding period starting in 2012.

Aachen is Germany’s westernmost major city, uniquely located at the border with Belgium and the Netherlands. It is the center of a dynamic cross-border knowledge region, where three languages converge. Aachen, the city of Charlemagne, has all the charm of a city steeped in history, while remaining young and active due to its large number of students. It is characterized by its institutions of higher education and high-tech enterprises.
