Jun Okuda holds the chair of organometallic chemistry and is one of the 3 directors of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University. His research area encompasses fundamental organometallic chemistry of the main group, transition, and rare earth metals, and the design, synthesis, and characterization of homogeneous catalysts and artificial metalloenzymes. Catalyzed transformations of interest include small molecule activation and polymerization and relate to the in-depth understanding of the factors determining the metal-centered reactivity. Rational ligand design and synthesis play an essential role, as reactive metal centers exhibit their inherent properties only through the interaction of their first and second coordination environments. Projects cover:
1. Activation of inert small molecules such as dihydrogen, ethylene, silanes, and carbon dioxide.
2. Stereochemically regulated polymerization of both petroleum- and biomass-derived monomers.
3. Molecular systems for dihydrogen storage and related energy storage/conversion systems.
