RWTH Aachen University in Germany and the University of California at Berkeley in the USA constitute the core of the Aachen-California Network of Academic Exchange, ACalNet. A long history of cooperation connects these two universities, even before the establishment of the network in 2013. The University of California campuses at Santa Barbara and Los Angeles complement the network as further academic partners with strong ties to the core partners.
Two internationally recognized research centers, Forschungszentrum Jülich, associated to RWTH Aachen University through the JARA-Jülich Aachen Research Alliance and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, closely associated to the University of California at Berkeley, are also partners in the network.
The network was completed by two industrial partners, Schlumberger-Doll Research and CAT Catalytic Center, offering interesting opportunities of practical training and exposure to applied research.
